Why here?

Background

Domburg Beach is one of Zeeland’s best-known and oldest seaside resorts. Because the beach here is constantly eroding, it is regularly replenished with sand. In addition to helping protect Domburg from the sea, these replenishments also serve the important purpose of providing recreational beaches with sufficient dry sand for residents and tourists. To this end, Zeeland’s coastal municipalities established a “recreational sand fund” in 2022. Using this sand fund, they are seeking to align with Rijkswaterstaat’s regular beach replenishment program, with the goal of preserving the beaches for recreational use.

Why here?

Due to the alternating cycles of erosion and sand replenishment, the waterline here is constantly shifting. This directly affects the width of the beach and, consequently, the space available for beach recreation. By monitoring these shifts in the waterline, researchers can investigate how beach width varies during times when more people are on the beach.
